Kiewit Corporation, a diverse company specializing in construction, mining, oil, gas, power, transportation, and water projects, was contracted to design a boundary wall around a large electrical switching station. One of the requirements of the design was to prevent a medium duty truck from penetrating through the wall, as detailed in the crash test specifications of ASTM F2656-07. Kiewit contacted CAE Associates to request dynamic structural analyses to simulate the wall impact events for two different wall designs at different impact angles and locations.
Mechanical Solutions Incorporated designed a platform for testing axial fans at different speeds. The platform was designed to avoid any natural frequencies within the test speed range of the fans. A number of design iterations were required until a design was proposed that could satisfy the frequency criteria (safety margin from major excitation sources) without creating an excessively large and heavy structure.
The Norsea Gas Terminal in Northern Germany plays a vital role in the connection of pipeline systems coming from the North Sea to the natural gas distribution network throughout Germany. Built in 1977, the terminal was set to be replaced in 2015 by the GASSCO Emden terminal being built by Linde Engineering to ensure the continued safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to the region.

On November 10, 2014, The Metropolitan Museum of Art unveiled a reconstructed statue of Adam, created by 15th-century Renaissance sculptor Tullio Lombardo. In 2002, the pedestal on which the statue was displayed collapsed and Adam fell to the floor, breaking into 28 large pieces and hundreds of small fragments. What followed was a twelve-year effort that has in many ways changed the world of monumental stone sculpture conservation.
CAE Associates determined that finite element models could be developed to do this quickly and efficiently. FEA models of seamed polymer bags were developed with the ANSYS Workbench/LS-Dyna software that simulated the process of filling the bags with a liquid in a specific orientation. This software was selected because it is best-suited to solving and predicting the highly nonlinear behavior associated with the motion of flexible membranes and fabrics.
IBM desired a quick and user-friendly method for designing and analyzing their rack cabinets. Traditional methods took too long and required an experienced ANSYS user to properly build the models. Instead, they wanted to provide input in Microsoft Excel and have it automatically build and analyze the cabinet in ANSYS. IBM chose CAE Associates based on their expertise with the ANSYS software as well as their many years of experience in developing customized, automated ANSYS routines and processes.
A standard connection, used to allow relative rotational motion between parts commonly consists of two clevises connected by a pin. Typical use would allow for an easy extraction of the pin to separate the parts; however after an accident condition, extracting the pin or rotating the parts could prove difficult. A clevis geometry sample was created for the purpose of both physical and analytical testing to determine the expected loads to operate the hinge. The intent of the analytical work was to provide a validated and reliable means of predicting the response of a clevis after an accident event.
