Finite Element Analysis of Medical Stent Devices

CAE Associates has unique expertise in the area of medical implant device design and analysis. CAE Associates has successfully performed detailed 3-D finite element stress analyses on both balloon-expanded and self-expanding stents that have passed the Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) rigorous approval cycle. These analyses were conducted for stents manufactured from Stainless Steel, Elgiloy and Nitinol shape memory alloy for a wide variety of customers in the biomedical industry. In addition to FDA submittal analyses, CAE Associates has prepared 2-D parametric models for use during the preliminary design phase of these implants. This has enabled our clients to dramatically reduce the time-to-market in this highly competitive industry.

A typical finite element analysis is highly nonlinear, involving contact, large strain, plasticity, and large deformation effects. Both the ANSYS and LS-DYNA FEA codes have been used successfully by CAE Associates to solve these problems.
