Introduction to CFX


ANSYS DesignModeler for CFD and ANSYS Workbench Meshing for CFD strongly recommended. B.S. in engineering or engineering experience. Knowledge of thermal-fluids theory recommended. Basic functional familiarity with computers. Intended for users with little or no CFX experience or those that wish to refresh their CFX skills.  


Introduction to CFX is a two-day course, which teaches problem setup, solution and analysis, and flow visualization using the postprocessor. This course trains students on the use of ANSYS CFX graphical user interfaces. Students will learn how to perform a CFD analysis using CFX. The emphasis will be placed on the following areas: model definition with the CFX preprocessor (CFX-Pre) to establish a numerical model for a CFD problem; CFX solver manager (CFX-Solver) to monitor/edit a solution in progress; and flowfield representation using contours, streamlines, etc. in the postprocessor (CFX-Post).

  • Transient/steady state calculation
  • Domain/sub-domain definition
  • Optional choice of initial condition
  • Boundary condition definition and specification
  • Physical modeling procedure such as turbulence, conjugate heat transfer, and rotating machinery
  • Appropriate boundary condition definition and specification with respect to the physical model
  • Selection of governing equations
  • Numerical parameters
  • Output parameters
  • Generate CFX definition files


  • Define a CFX run
  • Edit the definition file
  • Monitor/edit a run in progress
  • Stop/restart a run
  • Parallel computation setup


  • Post-processing after a CFX run
  • Flow visualization using contours, iso-surfaces, vector, streamlines, etc.
  • Animations
  • Quantitative analysis of CFD results

General Information

Seminars begin promptly at 9 a.m. and finish at approximately 5 p.m. each day. Please arrive by 8:45 a.m. The seminar fee includes: course manuals, full color workshop manuals, & instruction.
